If I were a journalist

One month in New Zealand

I know my little patch now. The buses, the familiar homeless people; the man with the beard and backpack who scavenges in rubbish bins, the lady who feeds the pigeons and reads her book whilst sitting on a piece of cardboard, Margaret (or so I’m told is her name) that sits on one of K’roads many benches chain-smoking, the familiar transvestites who can turn any normal sounding outfit into the ultimate slut piece and who are always, without fail, tanned 8 shades darker than any mortal.

I already have a favourite cafĂ©; Rasoi, which serves the best masala tea I have tasted outside of India. I felt like squeeing out loud with excitement the first time I tried it. Rasoi attracts an interesting array of cliental and on a spare afternoon there’s few things better than to sit and watch the goings on of the cafe and K’road from inside.

My job hunt finally proved fruitful and for at least Christmas I have a place to call work at our local Lush store. I’ve been a long time fan of their products, so was incredibly keen to bag a place as one of their Christmas casuals. It paid off, now I get to fill the bathroom full of Lush goodies and come home from work smelling divine.

Since I last wrote it seems I have spent a lot of time watching a lot of movies. I’ve been to the cinema to see; New Moon, 2012, Zombieland and Avatar (in 3D). For someone who normally only goes to the cinema to see whatever new Harry Potter film has been released, it’s rather novel. Even though I know it’s “wrong”, 2012 was probably my favourite out of the 4, purely because I am sucker for disaster movies and it is a culmination of every great disaster movie ever made.

On the DVD front I have watched; The Notebook, Into The Wild (again), Public Enemies and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I have to say I think Into The Wild was still probably my favourite. It was great to see it for a 2nd time and just as superb as I remembered it, if not even better.

In other events:

  • Tracey graduated - I went to my first graduation ceremony. It was interesting for the dash of Maori culture thrown in and to hear some of the random names people had. My favourite was Jermima Lily Francis Cream.
  • I visited Browns Bay, on a gloriously hot day and finally saw some beach/sand.
  • Tracey celebrated her 22nd birthday with a “Where The Wild Things Are” themed party. Cheyne and Tracey looked amazing in their outfits.
  • We saw the amusing unveiling of the (in)famous gigantic Santa that dominates the Whitcoulls building on Queens Street.

Here is Santa in all his glory, complete with abseiling elves.
